Merit Table Match 9th February 2008
Verulamians 64 - Mill Hill 2nds 12
Match report by Simon McCullough
On a sunny day at Cotlanswick the Squirrels put in one of their best performances of the season over a stubborn Mill Hill side.
The game began with a few phases of quick ball from the forwards which stretched the Mill Hill defence allowing Ashley Westhead to go over for the first try.
This quickly was followed by tries from Colney godfathers Thraves and Ricketts which were both converted.
Mill Hill's only reply in the first half was a quick tap penalty from their own 22 which caught the Squirrels defence on the hop. Mill Hill kept the first half score to 19-7 despite the forwards being dominant with strong running from Ricketts, Fretter and Westhead.
In the second half the game opened up even more and this was to Mill Hill's cost. Despite two pushover tries, which the referee failed to see, the pack made sure with a third surge which Stocky emerged from with the ball.
Strong tackling prevented a Mill Hill response, particularly noted was a double tackle from Fretter and Coyle which sent Ali G back to Staines with his pride wounded.
Coyle in a rare moment of unselfishness set up Sam Ricard to score in the corner. More quickly followed with all the Colney Massive getting in on the act.
In total 10 tries were scored and 7 were converted by McCullough.
Thanks go to James and Peter who were on the bench but unable to play a part due to the mad 3 subs rule.
A really strong performance which if maintained will ensure a good merit table position at the end of the season.
