3rd XV Match Report

Saturday 19th September 2009
Verulamians 5 pts Amerham  &  Chiltern 4ths 5 pts
It was a glorious day at the Cotlandswick Arena of sport. The pitch was in great condition a credit to the ground staff with the second team game called off I had numerous phone calls from players looking for a run out but with a full squad already I resisted all offers and stuck with our mix of vets and young lads. I was a bit worried when Amersham and Chilterns first player turned up I asked him about their 70 - 0 win the week before and he told me he didn't know as he usually played for their 2nds and had a late call up on the Friday night to play for the 4ths with both teams having big squads we agreed to roll the subs. Amersham and Chiltern started well and had us pinned for 15 min in our 22. The defence was absolutely awesome every man making tackle after tackle. Chris Hemingway was having a great game in the scrum and in the loose. Unfortunately he pulled a calf muscle and had to come off. The next 15 we played in Amersham's half but could not cross the line. Amersham forwards put in some good work and worked a try in the corner. We made a few changes at half time and started to push hard for the score Amersham not getting out of their half at all. Jamie the 10 got an injury so Casey changed from full back to scrum half and Wynn to 10 we were still pushing for a try. Then Casey injured his ankle when an Amersham player come round the side of the ruck to snag him. Wynn went back to 9 Osbourne pushed into 10. We now had no centres but in stepped Sam Richmond and Stuart Grey neither one of them taller then 5 foot six they both stood up well and tacked well above their weight. Good forward play and Ross Graham went over for the try. We missed the conversion and it looked like time was out. Wynn had run himself into the ground and had to come off, back on Casey limping into the game. Amersham got into our 22 and it looked like they scored the winning try only to realise that they had put the ball down on the 5m line. Everyone who played run themselves into the ground it was a fantastic performance. If I'm fit next week I don't think I could select myself. Thanks to Amersham it really was a sporting contest.
