The mighty 3rds undone, I don't think so!
A strange fixture this turned out to be.It all started on
the Tuesday with Millhillians fixture secretary phoning Trev and explaining
that they probably could not field a front row and they were only a fun team
and were just looking forward to the drink afterwards and a sing song.
I could understand their concern we had just stuck 80 points on Hitchin and Hitchin had stuck 60 on them the week before. With all this in mind we let the second team take some players. We were a bit short due to injuries work commitments and holidays but could put 16 out.
Unfortunately due to various reasons only 12 players pitched up. Lucky the twins Dad was down to watch and was quickly found boots and shorts to play for the first time in 12 year. Millhill lent us a prop so game on.
I was out of the country so do not know the pattern of the game. We were winning with five to go but Tom got injured so we went to 13. Millhill used the extra men and won 19-17.
An interesting thing was Millhill school was on half term and about four of the schools first team played including Hugo Watson a very talented county centre who many of us know from Old Albanians having coached and played with him.
I heard our performance was outstanding.Well done Brendon for playing winger and fullback at the same time and well
done Dell 'man of the match 'for helping out, The moral of the story is never
under estimate your opposition in this merit table. A lesson learnt the hard
way. But many thanks to Millhill for being great opposition and hosts and I
look forward to a drink with you later in the season back at ours.
